Bert McCarty Horticulture, Clemson University Turf is a major economic impact for the state citizens of South Carolina. Hi my name is Bert McCarty I’m a professor of horticulture at Clemson University in beautiful Clemson, South Carolina. I specialize in turf grass science; my job is to keep grass green. In the state of South Carolina we have over four-hundred golf courses. Each one of these golf courses have an operating budget of between a half to one million dollars a year with a majority of that going to personnel. So obviously golf and other turf entities are a major economic driving impact to the state citizens of South Carolina. Our major grass growing in the state during the summer is bent grass. Bent grass suffers when we get to the heat and moisture stress of the summer conditions in South Carolina so I try to figure out ways to make that grass stay greener with less input. Other avenues of turf grass interests in the state are sports field, sod farms and of course home lawns. Another major economic impact of turf grass in the state of South Carolina are playing surfaces for sports fields athletic complexes, etc. We have in the state over eight hundred that we know of sports fields in South Carolina and of course each one of those have their own economic imputs to the state economy. These sports fields, especially at the college level and higher, are specially built. For example Death Valley here at Clemson University is built on pure sand. It has an underlying

The La Concha Mountain forms a beautiful background for this costal town. This is the favourite town of the rich and the famous. It seems to be more cosmopolitan than the other towns. The seafront has many stylish and plush apartments and the boulevard is lined with fashion boutiques. Copies of the sculptures of the artist Salvador Dali are placed along the length of the promenade. Typical Andalucian houses can be found in the narrow alleys of the old part of the town. The places of interest are the gardens at Parque de la Alameda – which are ideal to sit and relax for a while, the beautiful Plaza de los Naranjos- meaning “Orange Plaza” in the old part, which is beautiful when the orange blossoms are in bloom, it’s also surrounded by restaurants and cafés making it a perfect place to unwind. There is also a local fish market here which supplies fresh fish to the restaurants. The “Parque de la Constitución’s” amphitheatre is the venue for outdoor productions during the summer months. Towards the west of Marbella lies the famous “Golden Mile”, famous for the lavish beach front villas which have made the real estate prices for the area go up. Due to the luxurious and rich standard of life in Marbella, it is often compared to other destinations like Monaco and Portofino.

Marbella offers a fantastic combination for an unforgettable golf holiday with a great family vacation. Championship quality golf courses of the “Costa del Golf”, pleasant sunny weather, lovely beaches, and breathtaking scenery, and more make it the place to be.

Why Take a Self Drive Golf Holiday in Northern France

Why Take a Self Drive Golf Holiday in Northern France

Whether you want to take the Eurotunnel under the channel for an early tee time, or sail across and spend a longer holiday amongst the available holes, self drive golf holidays in France are incredibly enjoyable and well worth the trip. We examine why you should chose to drive yourself across the channel and some of the many benefits this kind of holiday brings…

Why Take a Self Drive Golf Holiday in Northern France

Northern France offers some of the best golfing holidays and experiences in the world. From luxurious hotels to immaculate courses, the region is overflowing with opportunities for avid golfers, especially if you want to travel to more than one of the great courses on offer. We look at some of the reasons to take a self drive golf holiday to Northern France, and the many advantages this type of holiday brings…

Speed

One of the main reasons to go on a self drive golf holiday to Northern France is the various speeds with which you can get there. If you decide to, you can take a long cruise across the channel, taking in the coasts of Britain and France and enjoying the trip to the full. However, if like most of us you can’t wait to be out on the fairway, you can take the Eurotunnel. At 35 minutes from Folkstone to Calais, you can be at your destination less than an hour after you depart (depending on relative distances). This also means that with some careful planning you can take a half day, be on the course by the afternoon, spend the evening at the clubhouse or local hotel and then be back at work the next day.

Flexibility

Another great reason for taking your car on a golf holiday in France is the flexibility it offers you. Taking your own car means less time worrying about the minutiae of how you get to the course and more time on the course itself.

Taking your car also gives you more flexibility when it comes to accommodation; not waiting for a taxi, chauffer or transfer means you can stay in the hotel of your choice, be it linked with the clubhouse, in the next town, or even a boutique hotel further into the Normandy countryside. It also makes your French golf holiday more tailored to your needs - if you want to get to the course earlier or leave a little later; you are in control with your own car.

Choice of courses

Taking your own car has another added benefit on a golf holiday in France, that of choice of courses to play on. While you obviously choose which course you want to play on, if you want to play on more than one over the period of your golf holiday, a car is invaluable. Booking the tee time of your choice at several of Northern France’s gorgeous and prestigious golf courses presents a problem unless you can actually get there, and being autonomous with your own transport makes this much easier.

Taking a self-drive golf holiday in Northern France gives you the flexibility, choice and luxury you deserve on your holidays. It also provides you with the control over where you go, at what time, and for how long as opposed to being at the mercy of deadlines and leaving times from shuttles and hotel taxis.

Ten Top Spanish Holiday Golf Courses

Ten Top Spanish Holiday Golf Courses

Spain is well known for its stunning golf courses and the country represents great holiday value combined with excellent year-round weather. Golf enthusiasts looking to combine their love of the sport with a perfect holiday destination, could consider these ten top Spanish golf holiday courses.

Three Top Costa del Sol Courses

In the Eastern Costa del Sol, you’ll find the par 72 El Parador - the district’s oldest course, founded in 1925 by the Spanish Royal family. The course combines parkland with links style holes and is renown for its fast greens.

El Parador’s 6,824 yards is easy to walk and the course is suitable for all levels, although some holes are challenging, especially when the wind is up. Designer Tom Simpson created the course which has hosted several international events.

Challenging par 72 Torrequebrada, designed by Pepe Gancedo, is one of the most beautiful courses on the Costa del Sol. Once host to the Spanish Open, its steep terrain, well-positioned water and sand hazards, and eight doglegs mean the 6409 yards course is technically challenging, especially if your tee-off shot is not accurate.

The three sets of 9 holes at the par 72 Almenara course, spectacularly sited around lakes with dramatic views of the Mediterranean, can be played in various combinations. The course is difficult in places, because of the lakes, undulating fairways, tight turns and deep bunkers, and buggies are recommended on the 6,800 yard course. If you stay at the Almenara Golf Hotel you get preferential rates on your green fees.

Scenery and skill on Gran Canaria

Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, Spain’s oldest golf club, is set beside the crater of an extinct volcano, in the centre of the island. Narrow fairways and small greens mean you’ll need to be accurate on this par 71 course, and bring plenty of balls, since there are some deep ravines.

A Scenic Costa Brava Course

The par 73 Serres de Pals, with its mountain backdrop and local wildlife, is a highly rated, open, 6,780-yard course featuring fairway lakes and groves of pines. The greens are considered difficult. Designed by Ramon Espinosa this course is used by the PGA European Tour for their pre-qualifying tournaments.

A fine Costa de la Luz Course

Located on the ‘Marismas’ salt flats, beside the Ria Formosa estuary and the Atlantic Sea, the par 72 El Rompido South is a course that is both beautiful and easy to walk. Its wide variety of holes, make it suitable for golfers of all abilities, and you’ll have a chance to use most of your clubs on this 6,850-yard course.

Two Costa Blanca Courses

The home of several Spanish Opens, par 72, 6,653-yard El Saler was voted second best golf course in Europe by Golf World. Twelve holes are set among pine groves, while the other six are laid out, links style, through dunes.

Valencia’s most prestigious course, El Bosque, runs through peach and orange groves and is 6941 yards. The par 73 course has five lakes to get around or over and the dog legs can be challenging.

Two Majorca Courses

Golf Park Puntiró, a new par 71 course near Palma, is perfect for the higher handicapper. The Nicklaus designed course runs to 6,714 yards, and while some holes require accurate shotmaking, others are more suited to big hitters.

Par 72 Son Vida, although newly designed, is one of the oldest courses on the island. Its fast greens and tactically located bunkers complement the tree-lined fairways that include Mediterranean flora. Fine views over Palma Bay and Sierra Tramuntana can be had from this 5,829-yard course.

Rod Ritchie writes for many publishers including AA Publishing and Fodors. Bill Goff Golf Tours and Longshot Golf Holidays offer great value golfing breaks to many European and worldwide destinations.
