Bert McCarty Horticulture, Clemson University Turf is a major economic impact for the state citizens of South Carolina. Hi my name is Bert McCarty I’m a professor of horticulture at Clemson University in beautiful Clemson, South Carolina. I specialize in turf grass science; my job is to keep grass green. In the state of South Carolina we have over four-hundred golf courses. Each one of these golf courses have an operating budget of between a half to one million dollars a year with a majority of that going to personnel. So obviously golf and other turf entities are a major economic driving impact to the state citizens of South Carolina. Our major grass growing in the state during the summer is bent grass. Bent grass suffers when we get to the heat and moisture stress of the summer conditions in South Carolina so I try to figure out ways to make that grass stay greener with less input. Other avenues of turf grass interests in the state are sports field, sod farms and of course home lawns. Another major economic impact of turf grass in the state of South Carolina are playing surfaces for sports fields athletic complexes, etc. We have in the state over eight hundred that we know of sports fields in South Carolina and of course each one of those have their own economic imputs to the state economy. These sports fields, especially at the college level and higher, are specially built. For example Death Valley here at Clemson University is built on pure sand. It has an underlying

The greens are large and undulating making club selection a key. The 5,878 metre, par 71 golf course is highlighted by the “Santa Clara Corner” formed by the 12th, 13th and 14th holes, are a perfect combination of pars 4, 3 and 5, which requires the golfer to make long and accurate shots.

La Dama De Noche Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

La Dama De Noche Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

La Dama de Noche Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain is situated near Pueto Banus at the gateway to Marbella’s famous golf valley and there are good views of La Concha, which is Marbella’s emblematic mountain that stands behind the town.

La Dama de Noche Golf is the first course on the Costa del Sol and in fact Spain to stay open 24 hours a day so the crazy amongst you can play through the night if that is what makes you happy.

Designed by Enrique Canales, the course was opened in 1991 and takes its name from the flowering shrub whose night-time fragrance is said to keep mosquitoes away.

This is a nine hole golf course that can be played as a full eighteen and the big innovation here is the lighting system that enables you to play in darkness and this is strategically placed so as not to cast shadows. It is daylight quality and gives maximum visibility therefore making it easy to find your ball. If you want to play nighttime then this must be pre-booked and groups must consist of a minimum of players, presently fifteen.

The golf course itself does not have any rough to worry about but merely a river and two lakes that effect play on nearly every hole. It is a relatively short course by modern standards and play seems to keep at a steady pace here and is an interesting test for golfers of all standards.

On arrival there is ample parking and a pro shop where you pay your green fee, when you have finished your round you can enjoy a drink and a meal at the clubhouse where you will find the staff extremely helpful..

Royal Sotogrande Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Royal Sotogrande Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Royal Sotogrande Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain is situated just off the highway N-340, Cádiz to Málaga, at kilometre 130. Pass control gate at the entrance of the urbanization and take the Paseo del Parque towards the sea, which will lead you directly to the golf course.

The golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones’ which was his first golf course design on the Costa del Sol and opened to the public in 1964, and is considered to be in the top ten of Europe’s finest and forms part of the “Golden Triangle” with Valderrama and San Roque. The course itself, is located in perfectly natural surrounding and this very special design has matured beautifully over the years. The mature trees and natural vegetation that follow the wide luscious fairways enhance the beauty, which make this a pleasure to play.

The holes are varied with a good mixture of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty particularly where the water starts to encroach on to the course. This is particularly noticeable towards the end of the round and it has the ability to ruin a good card.

The strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and the fast greens do not make it any easier, another feature is the wind that has the habit of picking up during the round that gives the golfer no respite.

The greens are large and the tees are very long, some would say excessively so, but they allow for variations in pin placement and the length of hole. The contours of the greens are typical Trent Jones and the bunkers were the first in Europe to be filled with brilliant white crushed marble. Another first for Sotogrande Golf was the use of Bermuda grass on fairways.

Royal Sotogrande Golf is a club with extremely high standards where golf naturally comes first. You must ensure you have your handicap certificate with you and some form of identification. The clubhouse has recently been modernised and looks out over the first tee and eighteenth green.

On arrival you will find ample parking, clubhouse and well-stocked pro shop. There are good changing facilities and although the course can be easily walked, there are buggies on offer. The clubhouse also provides bar and snack facilities as well as a restaurant. There is practice area and group or individual tuition if required.

Alcaidesa Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Alcaidesa Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Alcaidesa Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain is perhaps the closest you will get to playing a “links” style course on the Costa del Sol, Spain.

The design and layout of the holes running alongside the beach give you the feeling you are playing on the Scottish links, albeit the climate is somewhat different to the Costa del Sol Golf.

Built to a design by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark in 1992, slight alterations and hole changes over the years has made Alcaidesa Golf one of the Costa Del Sol’s  most popular courses.

Alcaidesa Golf boasts of having well-defined fairways and large greens being of the very highest quality. It is a challenging course for all level of player’s with several holes where caution is required. Hit the ball straight and you will enjoy the course immensely but if you are a little wayward then there could be trouble ahead.

If the worse came to the worse you can always admire the views. There are some tremendous holes with the Par 3 2nd being quite magnificent particularly if you are off the back tees. The redesigned Par 5 15th  is another which can take your breath away particularly if you are a big hitter and want to try and reach the green in two over the water.

The Golf Course can be so beautiful to play in perfect weather with those stunning views but watch out when the sea breeze is about, this is when the course shows its teeth and your score can climb.

You can walk the course quite easily but there are ample buggies available and these are certainly recommended in the hotter months.

Alhaurin Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Alhaurin Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Alhaurin Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain sits just behind the Mijas mountain range on the Costa del Sol and beautifully blends in with its rugged natural surroundings.

It is an ambitious golf club and boasts three golf courses, 27 holes of which were designed by Spain’s favorite son the legendary Seve Ballesteros.

There is a full length 18 hole golf course, a short 18 hole course for juniors and a further 9 hole par 3 course, players of all levels can enjoy the main course and some holes have up to six different tee positions. It is a good test for even the most accomplished golfer who would be wise to make use of his long irons rather than a driver on many holes.

Alhaurin Golf Course itself is attractive with well kept green fairways set against the mountainous backdrop and natural vegetation. The main characteristic is the hilly design adapted to the surroundings with tight fairways all of varying degrees of difficulty, fast greens, lakes and ample bunkers.

The views are spectacular where the Mediterranean and Africa can be seen from the south and the mountains from the north. Our advice is to take advantage of the buggies normally included with the green fee, as walking across the hilly terrain will spoil your day and be very exhausting.

Alhaurin Golf is the perfect retreat for those looking for peace and tranquility with clear mountain air, you can get all this whilst being only 20 minutes away from the coast.

Alhaurin Golf are very strict about booking tee times and specify this must be done by fax giving names and handicaps of players. There is a driving range, pro-shop and tuition can be arranged on a group or individual basis.

Anoreta Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Anoreta Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Añoreta Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain was the second golf course built east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, and it was the first to be designed by the renowned Spanish and Ryder Cup player, José Maria Cañizares.

Cañizares has designed a course which is suited to all golfers, from beginners to experienced players and pros.

With a total length of 5,976 metres from the amateur tees, all the course’s fairways and greens are wide.

Anoreta Golf course’s lush vegetation and great expanses of water enhance its natural beauty. And its long par make it necessary to use strength, precision and patience.

The course is 18 holes, par 72, and is 5976 metres from the white tees. There are some difficult holes on this course and also some spectacular scenery as well as sea and coastal views to enjoy.

Mature trees and shrubs line many of the holes, however it is water that is the main feature. Not only are you afforded some splendid views of the Mediterranean particularly from the Par 4 seventh but water of the fresh kind forms a hazard at 11 of the 18 holes on the course. Notably the Par three 17th where the green is surrounded on three sides by water making its mere 168 metres suddenly seem none too few.

Although the fairways and greens are generally fairly wide, accuracy remains important as there are 11 holes with water hazards on this course.

Añoreta Golf has a driving range as well as practice facilities and a golf school that offers both individual and group lessons.

Finca Cortesin Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Finca Cortesin Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Finca Cortesín Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain opened to the public in October 2006.

It is located in the district of Casares, approx. halfway between Marbella and Sotogrande on the Costa del Sol, and it’s privileged location offers views over the Mediterranean and the African coastline from every angle of the golf course.

The golf course itself was designed by Cabell Robinson. Unlike most of the existing courses in the Costa del Sol Golf area, houses do not interfere with the game. This also means that there is a lot of room for the holes which are not cramped by buildings, so the player can enjoy his golf in a natural environment.

The length of the course reaches nearly 7 km from the back tees, becoming one of the longest courses in Europe, with a total par of 72. There are five par 3’s, eight par 4’s & five par 5’s.

The main features are the length of the fairways and the great variety of its natural vegetation which includes olive trees and corks.

The 18 holes are very unique since every hole is completely different to the others which makes playing very enjoyable.

Technically speaking, it is important to emphasize the following features –

The Bermuda 419 Grass fairways are very wide (up to 50 mts.)

The bunkers are beautifully shaped and filled with white marble sand.

Tee boxes are very high quality (every hole has several tee platforms so the player always finds them in perfect shape).

Without doubt, the greens are one of Finca Cortesín Golf’s jewels, they all have slight brakes and have the quality to be extremely fast.

Finca Cortesin also includes the Jack Nicklaus golf academy. This learning method has been personally developed by Jack Nicklaus, an enjoyable and personalized method of teaching, based on matching the swing with the player.

The Club House and the remaining sport facilities and services all have an excellent level of quality.

Guadalhorce Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Guadalhorce Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Guadalhorce Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain with its impressive Andalusian mansion built at the end of the 18th century, is a green oasis in the midst of the busy capital and approx 7 km from Costa del Sol’s International Malaga airport.

Guadalhorce Golf has an 18-hole course divided into two very distinct areas: from the 1st to the 9th the fairways are flat with no major hazards.

But from the 9th to the 18th the course gets quite tricky – the terrain is more uneven, the greens are raised and the fairways are more difficult.

There is a family atmosphere in the Clubhouse and access to the golf course is restricted to members depending on the season and availability.

Although not very well advertised the club offers many other sports activities apart from golf.

As the golf course is located right in the heart of the Costa del Sol Golf there is no shortage of accommodation of all kinds in the area, and Malaga, Torremolinos and Benalmadena are all close by.

It has become one of the best and most hospitable clubs on the Costa Del Sol, hosting more than 60 championships a year, the most important being the Vega del Guadalhorce grand prix.

Two years after being opened, the course was the venue of the Spanish Men’s Singles and Doubles championships. Guadalhorce Golf course is a parkland course, with wide fairways lined with tough rough and some banks.

Guadalmina Golf on the Costa Del Sol Golf, Spain

Guadalmina Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf, Spain consists of two different courses - Guadalmina Sur (south course) and Guadalmina Norte (north course)

Guadalmina Golf course is the second oldest club on the Costa del Sol which opened in 1959 as a nine-hole course.

The original South course was designed by Javier Arana, who extended it to a 18 hole par 72 in the late 1960s. The 10th and 11th hole of Guadalmina south run along the sea, and the course is bordered by well established trees. It is renowned for being an extremely tough course, so it is only really recommended for expert players. There are few water or earth hazards but the vegetation is abundant and it’s very easy to lose the ball. The 4th and the 16th are especially tricky.

The North course (18 holes, par 71) opened in 1973, and was designed by Folco Nardi. This course is gentler than its predecessor, but no less interesting, and it is quite tight in places. t is easier but it contains more water hazards and the terrain is more hilly with several slopes. the 7th and the 14th are especially tricky and are bordered by water.

Guadalmina Golf has hosted the PGA European Tour Qualifying School several times in the last few years, giving the course international recognition.

For practice, Guadalmina Golf has both a driving range and a nine hole pitch and put course. Other sporting facilities include tennis and paddle tennis courts. There is also a swimming pool set in a beautiful landscape garden.
